Since its launch in June 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 8.67 million software units in just eight weeks. This strong start has led Nintendo to forecast an ambitious target of 45 million software units sold by the end of March 2026. This goal relies heavily on the upcoming holiday season and the release of highly anticipated games.
The forecast is supported by strong pre-order data for titles like Pokémon Legends Z-A and Mario Kart World, with the Pokémon Center showing especially high demand for the new Pokémon game. Basic calculations suggest that if the Switch 2 continues its current sales pace of around 1.08 million units per week, it could indeed meet this target. With 34 weeks remaining until the end of March 2026, the console could sell an additional 36.84 million units, bringing the total to over 45 million.
However, some analysts are more cautious. Market research firm Omdia predicts that only 14.7 million Switch 2 consoles will be sold in 2025 alone. If this prediction is correct, Nintendo’s software sales forecast might be too optimistic unless new exclusive games significantly drive up console adoption. This trend is not new; the original Switch sold 14.9 million units in its first year, showing a similar pattern for console debuts.
The 449.99 dollar price point of the Switch 2 and its reliance on a limited number of games for 2025 could also present challenges. So far, only Pokémon Legends Z-A has been confirmed for an October release.
Historically, as noted by CNBC, Nintendo has had to lower its sales forecasts for the original Switch in the past due to consumer hesitation, a pattern that could repeat itself with the new console. The company’s ambitious software goal will depend on whether these new titles can convince a large number of people to buy the console, particularly during the crucial holiday shopping period.
