The release of 1348: Ex Voto is the kind of story that often defines the indie scene: a small team with a “big vision”, delivering a cinematic experience that aims to stand alongside larger productions. Developed by the 15-person Italian studio Sedleo and published by Dear Villagers, the game launched on March 12, 2026 for PC (Steam) and PlayStation 5, offering a dark, story-driven journey through one of Europe’s most turbulent eras.

Set in 14th-century Italy, the game drops players into a world shaped by war, religious conflict, and the aftermath of the Black Death. You follow Aeta, a young noblewoman turned knight, as she travels through devastated villages, mountain ranges, and crumbling remnants of ancient Rome in search of her lost companion.

However, despite its setting and narrative ambition, the launch has not gone smoothly. Early player feedback has been mixed, with many pointing to technical issues such as bugs, performance problems, particularly on PlayStation 5, and usability concerns like poorly implemented subtitles. The combat system has also proven divisive, with some players appreciating its unforgiving nature while others find the lack of difficulty options frustrating.

Yet this is where the story becomes more interesting. Rather than going silent, Sedleo has responded openly, thanking players for their feedback and outlining plans for upcoming patches aimed at improving performance and addressing key complaints. They have also disabled comments on their X post, seemingly to avoid anticipated backlash and criticism.

A few days ago, we reported that financial documents revealed that Sedleo SRL received more than €650,000 in tax credits from Italy’s cultural funding program, sparking debate about the role of public subsidies in the modern video game industry. But, these concerns have yet to be addressed.
