Fans of atmospheric adventures and psychological horror have a new game to keep on their radar. SOMBRAS: Negative Frames, the latest project from Maboroshi Artworks, is set to launch in Q4 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The studio previously earned praise for Last Time I Saw You, and its newest game appears to continue that focus on emotional storytelling while introducing a darker and more unsettling experience. Players step into the shoes of Shiomi Alterio, a Japanese-Spanish photography student whose life has been turned upside down following her parents’ divorce.

After moving to a quiet Japanese town to live with her father, Shiomi finds herself trapped inside a disturbing mirror version of reality. Familiar streets become twisted and dreamlike, shadows seem alive, and strange versions of herself begin appearing throughout the town.

Photography sits at the center of the experience. Players will use their camera to capture clues, document strange phenomena, develop film, and solve environmental puzzles. As the adventure progresses, new upgrades unlock additional ways to explore the world and uncover its secrets.

Questions surrounding identity, family struggles, mental health, discrimination, and artistic expression all play a major role in Shiomi’s journey. Combined with Maboroshi Artworks’ hand-drawn visual style, the result is a game that feels both comforting and deeply unsettling at the same time.
