Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, marking one of the biggest shifts in the platform’s history as it moves toward a fully digital future.

According to an official statement from Sony, all games released after the transition date will be distributed digitally through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers. While physical discs will no longer be manufactured for new releases, stores will still be able to sell boxed editions containing digital download codes instead of Blu-ray game discs. Titles released before January 2028 will not be affected and will continue to be available in physical format.

Sony said the decision reflects changing consumer habits, with digital purchases now representing the overwhelming majority of game sales:

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”

The company added that focusing on digital distribution will allow it to invest more heavily in new ways for players to access games while continuing to offer flexibility in where customers purchase them:

“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”

Sony emphasized that the transition only applies to new releases beginning in 2028 and does not affect existing physical games or titles already scheduled for disc release before the deadline.
