If you ever wondered why so many indie developers struggle just to get someone to notice their game on Steam, one week in August gives a pretty brutal answer: 720 games launched in only seven days.

According to data tracked by ICO Partners CEO Thomas Bidaux, Steam saw a record 720 new releases between August 24 and August 30. That works out to more than 100 games every day. The more worrying number is what happened afterward.

Of those 720 releases, 530 received between zero and nine Steam user reviews shortly after launch. In other words, roughly 74 percent failed to reach even ten reviews. Only 190 games crossed that threshold. From there, 95 reached at least 50 reviews, 62 managed more than 100, and just ten surpassed 1,000.

And we have now past 700 releases a week on Steam.A month earlier than I expected.

Those numbers do not necessarily mean every game below ten reviews failed financially, but they show just how quickly releases can disappear once they arrive on Steam. The problem is only getting bigger. Around 12,000 games reportedly launched during the first half of 2026 alone, representing another significant increase compared to last year.

As someone who receives indie announcements every day, it is becoming increasingly obvious that actually finishing a game is only part of the challenge now. Developers are launching into a storefront where dozens of other games can appear within the same few hours.

Steam continues to make enormous amounts of money, but for individual developers the fight increasingly seems to be over something far more basic: getting anybody to notice that your game exists at all.
