DEPERSON hasn’t launched yet, but its unsettling hand-drawn presentation is already getting noticed. Error Thing’s psychological horror adventure was nominated for Best Visuals at the Gamescom Awards 2026 and Excellence in Art at the Busan Indie Connect Festival.
The story follows Aaron, a frightened young man who wakes without his memories in Indrija, a dystopian country controlled through surveillance, conformity and fear. Searching for his identity gradually pulls him into a surreal nightmare where familiar environments shift and reality becomes increasingly unreliable.
DEPERSON mixes traditional point-and-click observation with environmental puzzles, platforming and character switching. Each playable character provides different abilities, requiring players to examine their surroundings and manipulate parts of the environment to proceed.
Choices can shape Aaron into somebody stronger, crueler or more psychologically damaged, while also changing the lives of characters caught in his journey. Branching paths and multiple endings mean uncovering the truth may depend as much on Aaron’s developing personality as solving the puzzles placed ahead of him.
The combination sounds ambitious, particularly for a narrative adventure. Games built around unreliable reality can easily become confusing for the wrong reasons, but DEPERSON’s striking artwork provides it with an immediately recognizable identity. Another recent hand-drawn psychological horror project worth watching is Nightmere I, which quickly funded its Kickstarter campaign.
Error Thing plans to release DEPERSON for PC and macOS through Steam in Q4 2026, published by PARCO GAMES. A free Chapter 1 demo is already available, giving players an opportunity to enter Indrija before the complete nightmare arrives.
