Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) has reached another significant sales milestone, officially surpassing the lifetime sales totals of both the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the Game Boy Advance (GBA). According to estimated figures from VGChartz, the ninth-generation console is cementing its place among the best-selling gaming hardware in history.
Through October 2025, the PS5 has sold an estimated 82.53$ million units worldwide. This figure now exceeds the 82.52$ million units sold lifetime by the PlayStation Portable (launched December 2004) and the 81.51$ million units sold lifetime by the Game Boy Advance (launched March 2001).
With the PSP and GBA milestones achieved, the PS5 is now setting its sights on higher-selling consoles from the seventh generation. Its immediate next targets are the Xbox 360, which sold 85.73$ million units lifetime, and the PlayStation 3, which sold 87.40$ million units lifetime. Beyond those, the 100$ million plus milestone is defined by the Nintendo Wii (101.63$ million units sold).
The PS5, which launched globally in November 2020, has achieved balanced success across major territories, though sales in North America and Europe remain the dominant drivers.
| Region | PS5 Sales (M) | PSP Sales (M) | GBA Sales (M) |
|---|---|---|---|
| North America | 29.75 | 21.62 | 40.39 |
| Europe | 28.57 | 25.31 | 21.31 |
| Japan | 7.13 | 20.02 | 16.96 |
| Rest of World | 17.08 | 15.57 | 2.85 |
| Total | 82.53 | 82.52 | 81.51 |
Within Europe, the PS5’s sales are particularly strong, led by Germany with 5.46$ million units sold, the UK with 5.27$ million units, and France with 4.52$ million units.
As production stabilizes and the console enters the middle phase of its life cycle, the PlayStation 5 is expected to continue its upward trajectory, challenging several former best-sellers to climb higher on the all-time sales charts.
