Speculation about a potential acquisition of Epic Games by The Walt Disney Company has emerged following comments from technology reporter Alex Heath, who suggested that some senior Disney executives are interested in buying the company outright.

Speaking on Matthew Belloni’s podcast The Town, Heath claimed there is internal interest at Disney, though opinions are divided, with some executives reportedly concerned about the financial risks and long-term implications of such a move. At this stage, the idea remains speculative, with no confirmed negotiations between the two companies.

The rumors come at a challenging time for Epic Games, which recently announced significant layoffs affecting more than 1,000 employees, around 20% of its workforce. The cuts follow a decline in engagement with Fortnite that began in 2025, alongside rising operational costs that have reportedly outpaced revenue. Epic has undertaken broader cost-cutting measures, including reducing spending on marketing and external contracts, marking its second major round of layoffs in recent years after similar reductions in 2023.

Despite these difficulties, Disney already maintains a strong strategic relationship with Epic. In 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion for a minority stake in the company, forming a partnership aimed at building a large-scale entertainment ecosystem within Fortnite. This collaboration integrates major Disney-owned franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar into interactive experiences, allowing players to engage with these properties through gameplay and digital commerce.

Any full acquisition, however, would face significant hurdles. Epic remains privately controlled by founder and CEO Tim Sweeney, whose approval would be essential for any sale. Sweeney has been a vocal advocate for an open digital ecosystem, leading high-profile legal battles against major tech companies over platform policies, positions that could complicate integration into a corporate structure like Disney’s.
