Augment Anthem is an upcoming 2D pixel-art metroidvania that aims to merge classic exploration-driven gameplay with modern customization systems when it launches on PC via Steam in May 2026. Developed by Project Ego, the project represents a debut effort that draws heavily from traditional Metroid-style design while introducing a darker, dystopian science fiction setting.

As a hybrid human-machine entity, players explore a hostile world filled with biomechanical threats while attempting to rescue survivors and rebuild the final human settlement Haven. Progression ties directly into exploration, as scavenged materials brought back to Haven unlock upgrades, expand narrative pathways, and reveal deeper layers of the game’s lore.

Gameplay focuses on non-linear exploration across interconnected environments such as flooded ruins, abandoned bunkers, and corrupted machine strongholds. You gradually unlock new abilities that open previously inaccessible areas, encouraging backtracking and discovery in classic metroidvania fashion. Combat encounters feature a mix of reflex-based action and strategic planning, with enemies and bosses designed to challenge both movement and loadout choices.

What distinguishes Augment Anthem is its flexible augment system, which allows you to significantly alter your abilities through a grid-based customization mechanic. By combining different augment types, you can transform weapons, movement, and utility tools in meaningful ways, from improving firepower to enabling advanced traversal techniques or deploying autonomous drones.
