Sony has announced a significant global price increase for the PlayStation 5 lineup, with new recommended retail prices taking effect on April 2, 2026. The changes impact all major models, including the standard PS5, Digital Edition, and the recently introduced PS5 Pro, marking the largest price adjustment for the platform since its launch in 2020. The Digital Edition now starts at $599.99 / £519.99 / €599.99, while the PS5 Pro climbs to $899.99 / £789.99 / €899.99.

According to Sony, the decision was driven by continued pressure from the global economic landscape, including inflation, rising component costs, and shifting market conditions. In an official statement, the company acknowledged the impact on consumers but emphasized that the move was necessary to maintain the delivery of high-quality gaming experiences. The increase is particularly notable for the Digital Edition, which has now risen by $200 since launch, representing a 50% price jump over six years.

Industry analysts had anticipated further price hikes following last year’s more modest increases, but the scale of the latest changes has drawn particular attention. Rising memory costs, with DRAM prices reportedly increasing by over 170% year-over-year, alongside tariffs and manufacturing expenses, have contributed to the shift.

The move also highlights a broader trend in the console market, where prices are rising rather than falling over time, contrasting sharply with previous generations such as the PlayStation 4, which saw significant price reductions at a similar stage in its lifecycle.
