We know it’s still a bit early to be putting together lists like this, but 2026 has already been an incredible year for indie games, delivering a wide range of titles worth playing. Even with March just coming to a close, the number of releases has been impressive, so we decided to compile a list of the 50 best indie games released so far this year. This list includes titles that launched in 2026, as well as selected early access releases, giving you plenty of great games to discover and try for yourself.

Escape from Ever After

From the moment I immersed myself in Escape from Ever After, I realized that it doesn’t shy away from its inspirations. Paper Mario is an obvious influence, with its extremely beautiful papery-like, detailed worlds and well-crafted characters. It’s a shame the game released after Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as it features a similar turn-based RPG combat system focused on parries, combos and synergies.

Tennis Elbow 4

It’s a premise that sounds ridiculous on paper and that’s exactly why it works so well in practice.

StarRupture

StarRupture is an open-world, sci-fi survival game that you can easily sink 100 hours into without even noticing. Despite the depth of the systems, it remains a surprisingly relaxing experience and one I still can’t put down.

Wicked Seed

Cairn

Hermit and Pig

I first fell for Hermit and Pig because of how it looked. The hand-drawn pixel art is simple but full of personality and the animations are packed with small, funny details. The combat surprised me the most. It’s turn-based, but there’s constant pressure because of a timer counting down during your moves. You can’t just sit and think forever, you have to act.

Nonentity Galaxy

In Nonentity Galaxy you play as a disposable corporate field agent commanding a fleet of spaceships. MENACE

ANTHEM#9

Everything is further rounded out by a strong anime aesthetic, clearly inspired by the style we associate with the Persona series.

YAPYAP

Mewgenics

Mewgenics didn’t come out of nowhere. Behind it are Edmund McMillen, the mind behind The Binding of Isaac, and Tyler Glaiel, his collaborator on The Basement Collection, and developer known for The End is Nigh. Together, they’ve proven once again that a familiar art style, deep RPG systems, tactical rougelite and huge replayability can find success, even beyond their existing fanbase.

Starsand Island

If you’ve enjoyed games like My Time at Sandrock, Stardew Valley, or even Rune Factory, Starsand Island will feel familiar, but it nudges the formula in a slightly different direction, mixing modern ideas with light fantasy elements in a way that’s easy to sink into. Its anime-inspired presentation, gentle pacing, and focus on atmosphere over spectacle make it feel like a quiet retreat rather than a checklist-driven game.

Roadside Research

Just when you think you’ve had your fill of small-scale management sims like Little Company or R.E.P.O, something like Roadside Research comes along and flips the script. This game is an absolute blast, especially when you dive into it with friends. Why friends, you ask? Because Roadside Research has this wonderfully absurd comedic twist: you and your teammates are aliens in disguise, running a roadside gas station as a cover, all while secretly studying human behavior.

Super Battle Golf

Multiple branching narrative paths and endings (including war-crime-heavy domination or peaceful construction sandbox routes) encourage replayability and roleplaying your chosen AI personality.

DrainSim

Rather than reinventing the formula, it builds on it, expanding the world, deepening the narrative, and introducing new layers to its puzzle design.

Homura Hime
