While I’m usually not a big fan of games that require a constant grind and repetitive tasks, Super Farming Boy convinced me the genre doesn’t have to be bad. It’s a charming and unique blend of farming, action, and puzzle-solving that takes the cozy farm-life genre and injects it with a humorous, fast-paced twist centered around combo-driven harvesting and a superhero narrative. In fact, the game doesn’t waste your time: the seasons are short and there’s enough to experiment with that you’ll never get bored.

Superpowers and Chain Reactions

Super Farming Boy puts you in the boots of Super, a young farmer whose life is upended when the evil corporation KORPO™ kidnaps his mom and friends and taxes all his proceeds. Your mission is to literally “harvest your way” to earn enough money to buy them back.

What immediately sets this game apart is its innovative approach to farming tools and movement. Instead of traditional shovels and watering cans, you are the tool. With a simple button press, Super can transform into various tools like a shovel for planting, a hammer for smashing rocks, or a pickaxe for mining. This unique mechanic extends to movement as well; Super can fly across the farm, allowing for quick navigation and efficient task management, though both actions consume a stamina meter. Running out of stamina before sleeping for the night results in penalties, making stamina management through purchased food a crucial strategic element.

The game’s central mechanic revolves around chain reactions and combos when harvesting crops. Each “magical seed creature” you plant has a unique combo effect when harvested. For instance, harvesting a corn plant might automatically harvest all adjacent plants to its right. By strategically planting different crops, you can set up elaborate chain reactions, clearing entire fields with a single click and earning significantly more gold. This puzzle-like element of planning crop layouts for maximum combo efficiency is highly satisfying and forms the core addictive loop.

Beyond farming, Super utilizes his combo powers for defense against pests and even boss fights. The game also introduces idle helpers (rescued friends and pets) that can automate tasks like auto-watering or auto-hammering, further streamlining your farm as you progress.

Reclaiming and Upgrading

The progression in Super Farming Boy is driven by your overarching goal of rescuing your mom and friends from KORPO™. Every night, after selling your harvested crops (which are automatically taxed by KORPO™), you can visit an in-game shop to spend your earnings.

This shop offers a variety of upgrades that are essential to your success. You can purchase back your lost superpowers, which are represented as old-school superhero trading cards. These “SuperTools” can improve your flying speed, tool effectiveness, or unlock new combo patterns. You also spend money on essential farm upgrades and potentially cosmetic items for your BlobHouse.

The game features unusual seasons (like Radioactive, Timewarp, and Volcanic), each introducing unique challenges and requiring strategic adaptation as they can affect crop growth and introduce new enemies. Some crops wither with season changes, so planning and revising your actions is necessary in this game. There are also Mushroom Boosters scattered throughout the land, providing instant effects like changing weather or granting temporary “UltraTool” transformations.

In other words, you’re constantly improving by earning enough money to buy back your loved ones, upgrading your abilities to farm more efficiently, and adapting to seasonal changes and new threats. There’s also a “To Do list” that guides you through basic mechanics and story-focused objectives, giving you a proper direction if you ever get lost. It’s surprising how polished this titles is and how it doesn’t have the ever same cozy approach to the farming, but rather forcing you to think ahead and experiment with different plants.

Overall Experience

Super Farming Boy boasts a charming retro Saturday morning cartoon art style, reminiscent of Cuphead, which infuses the game with a unique personality and humor. From the different character designs to the animated crop reactions, the visuals contribute significantly to its atmosphere. Even the dark themes such as kidnapping aren’t that strong, instead giving you opportunity to fix things.

I do have one major issue with the game: it can get repetitive. While you can upgrade KORPO buildings and automate processes, doing the same tasks over and over eventually becomes tiresome, especially after unlocking most of the content and experiencing all the seasons. Early-game stamina management is also quite tedious, as stamina gets wasted on trivial things. Despite these issues, I really like the ultimate combo system. You activate it by completing combos and then, for a certain period of time contemplated by rainbow colours, you can repeat the combo as much as possible to earn significantly more money.

In the end, Super Farming Boy successfully differentiates itself from typical farming sims by focusing on fast-paced action and strategic puzzle-solving through its combo system, rather than just the gradual passage of time. This makes it a refreshing and highly addictive experience for anyone looking for something new in the genre. I warmly recommend this game.
