Fun doesn’t always require hyper-realism or endless features. I shouldn’t be saying this, but I was completely hooked on My Card Is Better Than Your Card!, and honestly, that name is brilliant. It instantly connects you with those nostalgic childhood memories: collecting and trading football cards, or showing off a prized Yu-Gi-Oh! monster. Utu Studios has perfectly captured this feeling.

In this game, your personalized, sticker-adorned card is the centerpiece, but its depth comes from how it successfully blends a roguelike deckbuilder with creative card customization and strategic turn-based dueling. The game’s objective is refreshingly lighthearted: impress your rivals with your creations and ultimately become the “coolest kid on the playground.”
You aren’t just acquiring pre-made cards; you’re actively designing your own. This deep customization comes from decorating cards with adorable stickers, each of which provides a unique functional effect. The idea is that you have to discover and combine different sticker effects for powerful synergies. And yes, there are some disgusting combos. For example, you can build a deck full of Bug creatures and create synergies around them, or try a Garden/Flower build where plants activate their abilities over time.
Adding another layer of strategy, each sticker has a foil upgrade. While you can place them anywhere on your card, you must carefully consider positioning, as the first sticker placed typically activates first. The strategic possibilities are immense. The current Early Access version offers around 10 starter decks that you unlock by progressing and defeating various “boss” kids over time. Naturally, the more stickers you collect, the easier it is to craft powerful and unique builds.
The main battles are turn-based card duels that use tug-of-war format centered on collecting Stars and using candies. Each opponent requires a specific number of points to be defeated. The longer the duel lasts, the higher your combo multiplier grows. For example, a base of 12 Stars with a 4x combo instantly jumps to 48 Stars. This mechanic ensures duels don’t drag on forever, and the game features final showdown rounds that begin after turn 15 to force a quick conclusion.

The game loop extends well beyond the card duels, offering several activities between battles to improve and refine your deck. You can engage in treasure hunts to discover new cards, trade with rivals, digging for forgotten sticker treasures, and shop for new stickers or cards. To keep your deck optimized, you also have the option to recycle unwanted cards. Other activities, like finding toys in a claw machine or burying cards in a time capsule, further diversify the experience.
This comprehensive set of meta-progression activities ensures you are constantly honing your deck and perfecting your crafting skills, adding significant depth. Plus, those toys aren’t just for show; they function like active abilities that grant bonuses each run. For example, owning an anthill might let you spawn bugs at the start of a match, which can then immediately synergize with your current deck.
While My Card Is Better Than Your Card! is currently in Early Access, it still needs time to fully mature. There are definitely some balancing issues present. “Boss” kids, for instance, often feel too overpowered, especially when they steal your Candies (the resource used for playing cards) and Stars. The Dragon card also throws the game flow into chaos; it can clear the entire board. Imagine having 100 Stars only to suddenly find yourself losing because of a single card.
Additionally, content can feel a bit repetitive after your first clear, though there remains a huge amount of room for experimenting with combinations. Its cute, playful, and wholesome art style makes it instantly accessible and appealing to a wide audience. The visual design focuses on the colorful, stickered, and adorably crafted cards, perfectly supporting the game’s lighthearted, friendly tone and emphasizing creativity and fun.

If you’re a fan of deckbuilders and games with an unlimited amount of combinations, then My Card Is Better Than Your Card! should definitely be on your list. It carves out a unique niche in the genre by placing creation and personalization at the forefront of the strategic challenge. It’s surprisingly a lot of fun. The short run times ensure you’re always improving and ready for the next play session, making this a true hidden indie gem.
