ROUTE-16R has officially been announced by Sunsoft and Wit One, bringing the long-dormant series back with new mechanics, features, and a release date set for August 6 on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

Originally launched in the 1980s, the Route-16 franchise was known for its maze-based gameplay and high-speed chases. ROUTE-16R keeps that core identity intact but evolves it into something far more dynamic. Players race through labyrinthine stages, avoiding enemies while collecting scattered items, but now switch between two gameplay perspectives: Maze Mode for close-up navigation and Radar Mode, which reveals the full stage layout made up of 16 interconnected mazes.

The biggest twist comes from combat. Unlike previous entries, collisions with enemies don’t just end your run, instead, they trigger a transformation. Your vehicle, MAD X-R, shifts into a combat-ready robot, allowing players to fight back using attacks and special items collected throughout each stage.

Customization also plays a key role. Between stages, you can upgrade your MAD X-R using collected resources, improving attributes like speed, fuel efficiency, and combat performance. This adds a layer of progression that wasn’t present in the original titles, giving you more control over how you approach each run.

For the first time in the series, multiplayer has also been introduced. A local-only mode lets players compete in a capture-the-flag style mini-game, adding a competitive, arcade-like experience that fits naturally with the game’s fast-paced design.

Alongside ROUTE-16R, Sunsoft is also bringing back classic entries, including ROUTE-16 on Switch and ROUTE-16 TURBO across PlayStation 5, Switch, and PC. In Japan, a dedicated Route-16 Collection is also planned for Nintendo Switch, bundling multiple entries together.
