Console Archives MagMax is an upcoming faithful re-release of the classic 1986 side-scrolling shoot ’em up originally developed by Nichibutsu for the NES (Famicom). Hamster Corporation, known for its Arcade Archives and now Console Archives series, is bringing this title to modern platforms as part of their effort to preserve and update home console classics.
In the game, you control a transformable mecha called MagMax and play as a chosen hero battling to free humanity from the alien supercomputer Babylon and its mechanical forces. The gameplay involves flying through horizontal stages, collecting parts to upgrade your mech into a more powerful form, shooting energy beams at enemies and using warp zones to travel between surface and underground areas. It features a memorable boss fight against a gigantic multi-headed mechanical monster.
The Console Archives version launches on May 7, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. It includes modern quality-of-life features like customizable button layouts, rapid-fire options, multiple save points, screen filters to mimic old CRT TVs and support for multiple languages (Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish for menus and manuals).
This is part of Hamster’s broader Console Archives lineup, which focuses on 8-bit and 32-bit home console games and has been releasing titles steadily on these platforms since early 2026.
