We spoke with Balazs Domsodi, co-founder of the Hungarian NovaSphera Studio, who gave us insight into their upcoming game Elflock. He shared information about what we can expect from the game, the planned release date, and the mechanics that make this game special. Elflock will be available for PC via Steam.
For those unfamiliar with Elflock, the action takes place in a beautifully crafted fantasy world and offers a story-driven single-player experience. The game merges classic mechanics like exploration, inventory management, and puzzle-solving with fully voiced and animated dialogue trees. This allows players to uncover secrets, solve challenges, and interact with other characters in meaningful ways.
In the game, we follow the story of a Princess who is trying to help her father, the King, uncover a betrayal within the royal court. Throughout her journey, you will witness her emotional growth and face difficult decisions that will ultimately shape the fate of the kingdom.
Historical authenticity is the foundation of world-building in Elflock, particularly in evoking the atmosphere of 12th-century Europe. However, the game does not adhere strictly to historical facts, as magic plays a significant role in shaping events and environments. Mysterious magical creatures and rare artifacts with supernatural powers subtly influence the backstory.
Hungarian folklore is a key inspiration, which is evident in the depiction of mythical creatures, folk superstitions, and smaller details like traditional food and drink. Without revealing too much, we can hint that a unique Hungarian element will play a crucial role in the story.
While Elflock contains strong Hungarian motifs, the plot is not specifically set in Hungary, but in a fictional world inspired by that period. This approach gives us the flexibility for creative storytelling while maintaining an authentic medieval setting.
There are some similarities to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, as both games share a medieval ambiance and emphasize historical atmosphere. However, Elflock differs significantly in its focus. The exploration of magic and its mysteries is central to the game, and combat is not present at all. Instead, the game relies on classic adventure game mechanics and extensive dialogue trees.
It’s important to note that, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance was developed by a professional studio, Elflock is being created on a much smaller scale, by a group of enthusiasts developing the project in their spare time. It is a passion project that allows us to learn as we create.
Portraying the depth and emotional journey of the Princess is one of our biggest challenges. She is a young adult who must mature quickly as she returns to her homeland—a place she barely knows but is heir to, which is now threatened by the very kingdom she grew up in. To express her inner thoughts and struggles, we were fortunate to find a very enthusiastic and passionate actress.
Technically, we use facial motion capture for MetaHumans from Unreal Engine, a cutting-edge technology made possible by Epic Games. This tool is invaluable for developers with limited budgets, allowing us to achieve emotionally powerful performances without the need for expensive equipment.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Elflock is the Princess’s complex position of power, especially as she is young and inexperienced. She has to rely on a group of nobles who are older, more seasoned, and often pursuing their own interests. With the kingdom on the brink of war, the Princess must navigate complicated relationships, uncover hidden motives, and face surprising moments of both sincerity and betrayal. Players will explore the intricate agendas of the nobles and uncover the truth that lies beneath.
What makes Elflock special is its combination of traditional adventure game mechanics, like puzzle-solving and item gathering, with significant dialogue trees where the player’s choices directly shape a branching storyline. A strong focus on courtly intrigue is something that hasn’t been fully explored yet in this genre. Also, a low-fantasy setting is rarely utilized in games similar to Elflock.
The game’s plot is set entirely within the royal palace, including its courtyard and a few surrounding buildings. While the world is limited, the focus is on depth, not size. The narrative structure is far from linear; it’s more like a web. Players can explore different storylines, and the decisions they make during their exploration can lead to various outcomes. Activities that seem like side quests in one playthrough might have significant consequences if you explore them further in another run.
We are currently aiming to release a playable PC demo during the summer of 2025. While it’s difficult to predict the full game’s release date, our goal is to launch the PC version first, and potential console releases will depend on the reception and sales.
