Early Access survival games live and die by their updates. Players invest not just money, but time and trust, expecting developers to evolve the experience in meaningful ways. With the release of “Ocean – The Final Frontier,” Channel37 has delivered its most ambitious free update yet for The Last Caretaker, significantly expanding the sci-fi survival-crafting game’s world, story, and technical performance.

Available now on Steam and the Epic Games Store, the update deepens both exploration and narrative, pushing you further into the game’s mysterious oceanic setting. The first quest, called “The Maze”, introduces a transposium facility that is deceptively easy to locate but disorienting once inside. The second questline, “Rocky Islands,” takes players into a brand-new biome and rewards their efforts with the CS-17 Courier Skimmer, a fast-moving JetSki that transforms traversal across the open water.

Mobility and exploration are further improved by the addition of deep-sea sonar scanning. Caretakers can now probe the ocean floor for hidden structures and resources, adding a new vertical layer to exploration. You can now also personalize your ships with 37 full paint styles distributed across four paint zones.

Beyond headline features, “Ocean – The Final Frontier” introduces a long list of mechanical and technical improvements. Building systems now feature clearer visualization and better snapping, addressing common frustrations in construction-heavy gameplay. Dismantling objects produces distinct visual effects depending on the material, while underwater visibility has been improved to make exploration less punishing.

Perhaps most importantly, Channel37 has implemented broad performance and stability upgrades. Improvements to physics, rendering, buoyancy systems, cables, and the user interface aim to smooth out the experience across the board. For an Early Access title, these improvements are just as critical as new content, ensuring that the foundation remains solid as complexity increases.

Looking ahead, the studio has already confirmed its third major update, titled “Curiosity Wakes,” scheduled for early spring 2026. You can also read our review of the game here.
