Sony Reportedly Scaling Back PC Ports for PlayStation Exclusives

Sony is reportedly scaling back PC releases for PlayStation 5 exclusives following poor sales and concerns over brand dilution. Sources told Bloomberg that major upcoming titles like Ghost of Yōtei and Housemarque’s Saros will remain console-exclusive. Here are the key details:

  • The Strategy Shift: While single-player exclusives are being pulled back, multiplayer titles like Marathon and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls are still expected to launch cross-platform.
  • Exceptions: Death Stranding 2 and Kena: Scars of Kosmora are reportedly still slated for PC ports.
  • Context: This follows a 2024 backlash over PSN requirements for Helldivers 2 on PC and ongoing reports that the “PS6” could be delayed until 2028/2029 due to hardware shortages.

Women represent a massive, overlooked market for gaming growth, according to new research

Ampere Analysis reports that while women make up 48% of gamers (922 million players), a 93-million-person gap remains compared to men. Bridging this gap represents a massive, untapped opportunity for engagement and monetization:

  • Preferences: Women favor narrative-driven, single-player titles. For example, 18% of surveyed women recently played The Sims 4.
  • Platform Divide: Female players dominate mobile and tablet gaming but are outnumbered on PC and consoles.
  • Title Trends: In a study of top games, only three console/PC titles (Animal Crossing, The Sims 4, and Roblox) had a female majority, compared to 13 titles on mobile.

Ampere suggests that tailoring more core gaming experiences to these preferences could unlock significant market growth.

93% of AA/AAA Studios Say Pre-Launch Metrics Fail to Predict Success

A new report from FirstLook reveals a major disconnect in the gaming industry: 93% of AA/AAA leaders cannot reliably predict a game’s success despite tracking more data than ever. The study of 250+ senior leaders shows that traditional “vanity metrics” like wishlists and trailer views are failing to forecast commercial performance accurately.

The Prediction Gap

  • False Positives: 76% of studios saw games underperform despite strong pre-launch data.
  • Sleeper Hits: 83% of leaders worried a game looked weak, only for it to exceed expectations.

CEO Eden Chen notes that studios are “drowning in data” but misjudging demand. To fix this, the industry is shifting focus from passive awareness to active commitment:

  • Top Success Predictors: Once players get hands-on, studios prioritize Hours Played (41%), Replay Rate (30%), and Retention (29%).
  • The Discord Factor: For surprise hits, Discord community growth was the #1 success factor (48%), outranking YouTube views and press coverage.
  • The Opportunity: Despite its predictive power, only 40% of studios currently track Discord metrics in a structured way.
