Sony showed more than 30 games across its latest State of Play broadcasts, yet judging by the reaction afterward, that still was not enough for a noticeable number of PlayStation fans.
The September 3 presentation included Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Until Dawn 2, Ghost of Yōtei content, Metro 2039, Maneater 2, Gran Turismo 7 updates and a long list of Japanese and Asian titles. On paper, that is hardly an empty showcase. The problem seems to be what players were expecting rather than the raw number of games shown.
Much of the criticism focused on the lack of major new first-party announcements, particularly after previous showcases had raised expectations with titles such as God of War: Laufey and Marvel’s Wolverine.
Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet was also notably absent, while a large portion of the show was dedicated to DLC, complete editions, existing games and third-party projects. Even the opening attracted criticism after Sony began with footage from the upcoming live-action Resident Evil movie rather than immediately showing a game.
The reaction quickly spread across social media, with some players calling it one of the weakest State of Play presentations Sony has produced. Posts criticizing the showcase gathered thousands of likes, while ongoing frustration around PlayStation’s future physical media plans also spilled into the livestream chat.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that PlayStation fans are not judging these showcases by how many games appear anymore. They are waiting for those one or two major first-party announcements that make the entire event feel important.
