Kickstarter campaigns can sometimes spend weeks slowly crawling toward their goal, but psychological detective game Nightmere I apparently did not have that problem, reaching its CA$15,000 target in only three hours.
Developed by Cupkisu Studios, Nightmere I mixes a traditional detective mystery with psychological horror and RPG-style exploration. The story takes place in 1991 and follows private investigator Amelia as she arrives in the small town of Nightmere searching for Sarah, a missing medical student. Naturally, what initially appears to be a relatively straightforward disappearance quickly begins turning into something much darker.
What caught my attention most is how confrontations work. Amelia does not simply rely on weapons when things become hostile. Evidence, logical deductions and contradictions can also be used to break through suspects’ stories, essentially turning parts of an investigation into their own form of combat.
Players can explore the town, question residents, investigate abandoned buildings and surrounding woods, and make decisions that cannot simply be undone afterward. The entire game is also being created with hand-drawn 2D artwork, including its characters, environments, cutscenes and interface.
Nightmere I launched its Kickstarter campaign with a CA$15,000 goal and reached that figure within three hours. The campaign will continue until October 27, with stretch goals covering additional languages, console versions, animated cutscenes and expanded story content.
A playable demo is already available on Steam, so you can at least investigate Nightmere yourself before deciding whether this mystery is worth backing.
