Barkitect has released a playable Steam demo for Kinghold, a real-time wave-defence roguelite in which the king fights directly alongside an autonomous army.

Every run is driven by a 20-second interval. When the countdown reaches zero, another enemy wave appears, income is collected, cards refresh and various perks or unit effects can activate.

Players directly control the king as he fights enemies, gathers resources and searches for treasure. Troops, buildings and traps can only be deployed at his current position, making movement across the battlefield central to every strategy.

Once summoned, soldiers operate without constant micromanagement. Different units can advance the frontline, defend territory, hold a position or accompany the king while players concentrate on collecting resources and responding to threats.

Runs begin with a deck of up to five cards assembled within a limited budget. Further cards and perks become available as the king levels up, supporting approaches ranging from large peasant armies to smaller groups of elite troops maintained through healing and support.

The objective is to survive 50 intervals, defeat the final boss and turn remaining health into a score multiplier. The full release is planned for the first quarter of 2027 with additional cards, maps and enemies. For more active tower defence, read our IDUN – Frontline Survival review.
