A sharp decline in RAM prices could unexpectedly work in favor of Valve as it prepares to launch its long-awaited Steam Machine, potentially keeping the cost of the device more competitive despite earlier concerns. Originally announced in late 2025 as a living-room gaming hybrid powered by AMD hardware, the Steam Machine was positioned alongside other new hardware projects, including the Steam Frame VR headset and an updated controller. However, what was initially planned as an early 2026 release quickly became uncertain due to a global shortage of memory and storage components.
The supply crunch, driven largely by demand from AI data centers and hyperscale computing companies, significantly impacted the availability and pricing of RAM and SSDs across the tech industry. In February 2026, Valve acknowledged the issue publicly, explaining that it had delayed announcing final pricing and release dates in order to reassess costs.
The company shifted expectations toward a broader first-half 2026 launch window. While rumors emerged in early March suggesting further delays, Valve reaffirmed its commitment to releasing the Steam Machine and related hardware within 2026, describing the situation as challenging but under control.
Unlike many hardware manufacturers that responded to rising component costs by increasing prices or accelerating production, Valve adopted a more cautious approach by holding back on firm commitments. This strategy may now prove advantageous. With recent signs pointing to stabilizing or even declining RAM prices, the cost pressure that once threatened to push the Steam Machine’s base price toward or beyond $950 could begin to ease. Valve has also made it clear that, unlike traditional console makers, it does not plan to subsidize its hardware.
