At a time when streaming feels synonymous with modern entertainment, a surprising countertrend is gaining momentum. According to a recent report from the Los Angeles Times, members of Gen Z are increasingly embracing physical media: DVDs, Blu-rays, and especially 4K UHD discs despite growing up in the age of instant, on-demand access. What might look like nostalgia is, in reality, a practical and deliberate shift toward ownership, permanence, and control.

The frustration fueling this revival is familiar to anyone juggling multiple streaming services. Movies and shows vanish without warning. Catalogs are fragmented across platforms. Finding something to watch often means endless scrolling through algorithm-driven recommendations. For many young viewers, the convenience that once defined streaming has morphed into “subscription fatigue.” Physical media, by contrast, offers simplicity. You buy it, you own it, and it never disappears due to licensing changes.

The appeal is both cultural and functional. Much like vinyl’s resurgence among millennials, discs offer tangibility in a digital world that often feels temporary. A shelf of films becomes a curated identity rather than a rotating carousel dictated by corporate contracts. There’s also a quality argument: 4K UHD discs frequently deliver superior video and audio compared to compressed streaming versions, making them especially attractive to film enthusiasts building home theater setups.

Industry data suggests this isn’t just anecdotal. The Digital Entertainment Group reports that overall U.S. spending on DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K UHD discs fell by only about 9% in 2025, a sharp slowdown compared to the 20%+ annual drops seen in 2023 and 2024. Even more striking, the premium 4K UHD segment grew 12% year-over-year in 2025, despite a relatively quiet blockbuster slate late in the year.

This trend is equally vital for the gaming industry. Physical media is increasingly being treated as a treasure, with retro titles frequently making headlines as they resurface. Modern gamers aren’t just hitting “download”, they deeply value the tangibility of a physical collection.
