A big moment has arrived for people who play old games: the PCSX2 emulator now works with over 99.5% of all PlayStation 2 (PS2) games. Retro Dodo shared this news, and people are calling it a huge victory for preserving games. This achievement means the games from the most popular console ever will always be easy to play for modern gamers.
The PS2 first came out in the year 2000 and has over 4,000 different games from all parts of the world. The PCSX2 emulator, which people have been building for over 20 years, now says almost every game is either “Playable” or “Perfect.” This success rate has grown slowly but surely, up from about 98% in 2021 and 99% in late 2023.
Remarkably, out of more than 4,000 titles, only four games currently remain rated below “Playable”: Final Fantasy XI (due to its reliance on online servers), Marvel Nemesis – Rise of the Imperfects (which struggles with graphical and audio glitches), DRIV3R (noted for physics and rendering bugs), and World Series Baseball 2K3 (prone to crashes).
Because PS2 hardware gets older, emulation makes sure we can keep playing these games for many years. This huge success in compatibility is very important for saving video game history. But remember, using PCSX2 means you must bring your own legal BIOS and game files (ROMs). Sharing copyrighted material is still against the law. As the community said: “That’s a major achievement in terms of game preservation.”
