In a recent interview with AUTOMATON, president of Nihon Falcom Toshihiro Kondo shed light on the future of the Trails series, including plans for remakes and new mainline installments. With the full 3D remake of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, now titled Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, set for a release on September 19, 2025, fans have been eager to know what comes next.
Kondo addressed the question of a remake for the sequel Trails in the Sky SC stating: “If we didn’t follow up with a remake of Trails in the Sky SC, people would go: ‘You’ve got to be kidding me.'” He confirmed the company’s intent to create a remake, likely titled Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, and emphasized a desire to avoid the long gap that occurred between the original PC releases of the first two games. Regarding remakes beyond that, Kondo said it will depend on fan demand.
The interview also touched on Nihon Falcom’s plans for brand-new titles. The latest entry in the series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon, is scheduled for an English release in January 2026. According to Kondo, this game is in a similar position to the first Trails in the Sky story-wise, so a sequel is already in the works. This sequel is being developed in parallel with the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter remake, though formal announcements are not yet ready.
Kondo also offered insight into his overall strategy for the franchise, noting that he wanted to remake the first Trails in the Sky before depicting the series’ climax in Kai no Kiseki. He explained that this was a way to “recharge our batteries” for the Trails team, which had grown “a bit tired.” He hopes to continue developing both titles for new players and new mainline installments for longtime fans, seeing both as essential for the series’ survival.
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will be available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5. The game will also have a Nintendo Switch 2 edition, which can be purchased as an upgrade for $1.00.
