This Cozy Indie Game is Deliberately Launching Against GTA VI

Most developers would probably rather launch their game during a power cut than compete directly with Grand Theft Auto VI. Fairy Mount Games has chosen the opposite approach, scheduling Flame, Forest & Flood for November 19, 2026, the exact day Rockstar’s blockbuster arrives.

The decision is intentional. Fairy Mount says it wants to “make a stand for indies,” arguing that one enormous release shouldn’t be allowed to claim an entire month. Co-founder Blazej Zywiczynski described the studio as being formed partly from frustration with an industry where familiar franchises dominate investment, worthwhile projects struggle for funding and developers continue losing their jobs.

In Flame, Forest & Flood, Up to three players compete for territory by spreading flame, forest and water across a board, with each element strong against another. Matches contain no randomness and support solo play, bots, local multiplayer and online competition.

Away from matches, players can decorate a personal Garden, complete challenges and build custom boards to share with others. The game is being developed without generative AI, while Fairy Mount says it prioritizes open-source development tools where possible.

Realistically, a tiny strategy game isn’t going to topple GTA VI. It doesn’t need to. Simply refusing to disappear from the calendar makes the point Fairy Mount wants to make: blockbuster week doesn’t have to mean blockbuster only.
