Discussions about Xbox Game Pass often focus on blockbuster titles like Black Ops 6 and Starfield, but for indie developers, the service can be transformative. Thomas Sala, the solo creator behind acclaimed indie games The Falconeer and its sequel Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles, recently shared his thoughts on Game Pass during a Reddit AMA.
Sala explained that The Falconeer joined Game Pass about a year after its launch. The result? Over a million players installed the game through the service, dramatically boosting its visibility. For Sala, the experience was so positive that he would eagerly partner with Game Pass again. “I’d be on Game Pass the moment they could fit me in, no questions asked,” he said. For him, success isn’t about profit but about reaching players. “I’m a dev. I want players. I don’t care about the money, let folks play!”
Despite its benefits, getting a game onto Game Pass is far from guaranteed. Sala detailed how Microsoft carefully curates the service’s schedule, balancing releases to maintain consistent quality and variety. Developers need to show interest in participating, but the decision ultimately lies with Microsoft. “These things are up to the gods in Redmond,” Sala quipped, referring to Microsoft’s headquarters.
Still, Sala remains optimistic. He emphasized that being included in Game Pass can be especially valuable for indie developers, providing fair compensation and unparalleled access to a massive audience. For developers like him, Game Pass offers a platform to share their work with the world and that’s what truly matters.
