Independent developers have become an increasingly important part of the Xbox ecosystem, and new information shared during Game Developers Conference highlights just how significant that relationship has become. According to Xbox Wire, the ID@Xbox program has now generated “hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars” in sales through the Xbox Store, underlining the growing commercial impact of indie games on the platform.

Launched in 2013 by Microsoft, ID@Xbox replaced the older Xbox Live Arcade model and introduced a more open publishing system. The initiative allows independent developers to self-publish games across Xbox consoles and PC while gaining access to Microsoft’s development tools, services, and distribution infrastructure. Over the years, the program has helped thousands of indie titles reach players worldwide.

With the program proving successful, Xbox is now focusing on improving how players discover those games on its storefront. One of the main updates targets the New Releases section of the Xbox Store, which has often been crowded by multiple versions of the same game. In some cases, publishers listed several bundles, such as standard and deluxe editions, causing a single title to appear repeatedly. Under the new approach, Xbox will reduce that clutter so only one version of a bundled game appears in the section.

The company is also reinforcing its developer code of conduct to prevent attempts to dominate store visibility through multiple listings or bundles. Alongside this, Xbox plans to refine its algorithmic promotion systems to make discovery fairer across the platform.
