Kyle Stevenson of Six One Indie Showcase spoke with two developers, James and Jawar from indie studio Video Cult, about their journey in the gaming industry and their work on two standout titles: the Rain World “Watcher” DLC and the upcoming Airframe Ultra. Featured during the Showcase, the developers shared insights into their creative process and long-term goals.

James and Jawar come from artistic backgrounds, James from music, and Jawar from graphic design. Over time, James’s role evolved from musician to game developer, eventually becoming CEO of a gaming company. Jawar began experimenting with game development as a teenager before formally studying graphic design at university. During his studies, he started working on Rain World, which became the foundation of his career.

Rain World

Rain World, their first major project, began as a small hobby but gradually grew into a large and complex game. Initially envisioned as a simple multiplayer experience where players navigate a small creature ecosystem, it evolved into a critically acclaimed survival platformer with a vast world filled with unique creatures. Development took several years, while James and Jawar built a devoted fan base through forums and devlogs.

The team expressed enthusiasm for expanding the Rain World universe through the Watcher DLC. This expansion allows them to introduce ideas that didn’t fit into the base game. While Rain World is known for its difficulty and introspective tone, James and Jawar highlighted the challenge of adding new content while preserving the game’s core atmosphere. The Watcher DLC continues to build upon the game’s world and narrative, offering fresh experiences for longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Airframe Ultra

Beyond the Watcher DLC, the team is developing Airframe Ultra, a futuristic combat-racing game that aims to balance fast, chaotic gameplay with a unique aesthetic. Describing the project, the developers said they wanted to create something fun and action-packed, contrasting with the serious tone of Rain World. They drew inspiration from classic combat racing games like Twisted Metal and Road Rash, hoping to capture the nostalgia of old-school couch multiplayer games.

Airframe Ultra blends elements of Mario Kart and Mad Max: Fury Road, delivering cartoonish but intense violence and high-speed action. The developers also discussed their goal of bridging the gap between traditional local multiplayer and modern online play. The game will allow multiple players on one system to play alongside online players, recreating the feeling of couch multiplayer over the internet.
