Developer Contrast Games has announced that its 2.5D Metroidvania Akatori will launch for PC via Steam on August 5, followed by PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on August 12. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned for release in 2027.

The action-adventure follows Mako, a young monk from the Firebird Temple, as she journeys across interconnected realms to stop the mysterious Amber Storms, a corruption spreading throughout the world. Accompanied by a mysterious red bird sealed inside her staff, Mako must uncover the source of the catastrophe while battling powerful enemies and exploring myth-inspired environments.

“Players have been asking when they can fully dive into Akatori, and we’re thrilled to share the dates finally,” said Contrast Games CEO Alex Kishchinskiy. “The team has poured years of care and consistency into crafting a Metroidvania that respects the genre and ensures movement and combat are tremendous. We can’t wait for players to experience the full adventure.”

At the heart of the game is Mako’s mystical staff, which serves as both a weapon and traversal tool. Players can chain together aerial and ground combos while using parkour abilities such as wall-hooking, gliding, sliding, and fast-paced movement to navigate highly vertical levels.

Akatori also features dynamic enemy ecosystems where creatures interact with one another, trigger environmental hazards, and create unpredictable encounters. Combined with hand-crafted boss battles, stylized 2.5D visuals, and a world inspired by Asian mythology, the game aims to deliver a modern take on the Metroidvania formula.
