Nintendo has finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 via a new trailer. The announcement provides a glimpse of the refreshed hardware, a refined design, and backward compatibility with the original Switch. Although many details are still unknown, fans are eagerly awaiting the Nintendo Direct in April for more information.
The trailer begins by showing the original Switch gradually transforming into the Switch 2, revealing its rounder edges and sleeker design. The updated kickstand now allows for a wider range of angles, offering greater flexibility for gameplay. One of the significant changes involves the Joy-Con controllers, which now feature a new charging connector and an improved detachment mechanism. Interestingly, the right Joy-Con includes an additional button, although its purpose has not yet been revealed.
The Switch 2 dock has also been redesigned. It now has rounded edges and a lower profile, which allows for greater visibility of the console when it is connected. The trailer confirms that the Joy-Con controllers can still be combined into a single controller for TV play, retaining a key feature of the original Switch.
One of the most exciting features is backward compatibility. Both physical and digital games from the original Switch can be played on the Switch 2, although some games may not be supported. This ensures continuity for players while expanding the game library.
Nintendo plans to hold hands-on events worldwide following the Nintendo Direct on April 2nd. The following cities and dates have been confirmed for Europe:
While Nintendo hasn’t officially announced the list of games yet, the trailer hinted at a possible release of a new Mario Kart game, featuring improved graphics, new character models, and an increased number of players on screen. Additionally, there are rumors that third parties are working on Switch 2 ports for visually demanding titles such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
The console will reportedly use the Nvidia Tegra 239 SoC and a feature for network image scaling, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS technology. This could allow lower resolution scaling up to 1080p or even 4K, to reduce game size and optimize performance.
Although the exact release date is still unknown, it is speculated that the console could launch in June 2025. Regarding the price, estimates vary from €449 and up.
