For months, fans have eagerly awaited more information about Pompeii: The Legacy, an ambitious city-builder game developed by solo developer Željko Kos. Instead of the usual polished cinematic trailer, he decided to share 30 minutes of raw, unedited gameplay footage from the current pre-alpha version. This unfiltered view provides a rare insight into the game’s core mechanics, visuals, and atmosphere. You can join the Playtest on Steam.

The footage showcases the basic city-building mechanics in Pompeii: The Legacy. Players can see the foundations of a bustling ancient Roman city, including buildings, roads, and citizens going about their daily activities. Although the visuals are still in development, they faithfully capture the atmosphere of Pompeii, with its vibrant streets and the looming Vesuvius in the background.

However, the developer emphasizes that this is not the final version. The game is still in development, and numerous upgrades are planned before the Steam Playtest launch in mid-March. Improvements include enhanced visuals, such as more detailed textures and sophisticated lighting, as well as gameplay optimizations, like faster construction and a greater focus on bonuses and upgrades.

The upcoming Steam Playtest will bring a host of new features and improvements. You can expect additional buildings, such as mines and metal processing facilities, which will expand the game’s production chains. Hygiene will also play a bigger role, with new structures like barbershops and public latrines that will help maintain citizen health and morale.

The trade system, which is currently absent from the footage, will be fully implemented for the Playtest, allowing you to manage economic strategies and inter-city trade. Although military and city defense mechanics, such as walls, soldiers, and combat, are planned for development after the Playtest, they will bring an additional strategic layer to the game.
