The next generation of Xbox hardware could come with a much higher price tag than gamers are used to. Early reports suggest that Project Helix, the upcoming console from Microsoft, may launch somewhere between $999 and $1,200, potentially making it one of the most expensive mainstream gaming consoles ever released.
The estimate comes from tech journalist and YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who has been discussing Xbox’s next system for months and previously reported that the device would blur the line between console and PC. Microsoft recently confirmed the Project Helix codename and revealed that the new system will run both Xbox and PC games, reinforcing earlier rumors about a hybrid design.
According to the journalist, the reason for the higher price lies in the hardware Microsoft is reportedly targeting. He believes the console could use technology comparable to the successor of AMD’s Radeon 9070 XT graphics card, based on a next-generation RDNA architecture. With high-end graphics components, expensive RAM, and a custom CPU built on a 3nm process, the overall cost of parts could climb quickly.
Breaking down the potential bill of materials, he suggested that the GPU-level hardware alone could be worth roughly $600, while additional RAM and a more advanced processor could push the production cost close to $900. If Microsoft wants to sell the system with even a small profit margin, that would likely push the retail price to around $999 or higher.
Even so, the source argues that the console probably won’t exceed $1,500, with the most realistic range falling between $999 and $1,200. Pricing it close to $1,000 could also serve as a strategic move, positioning the console as a premium device that significantly outperforms its competitors.
If these projections are accurate, Project Helix could represent a different philosophy for console hardware: a high-end system aimed at players who want PC-level performance in a console-style experience. That strategy may not appeal to everyone, but for gamers considering a move toward PC gaming, a powerful hybrid Xbox could become an intriguing alternative.
