An unofficial native Donkey Kong 64 PC port is currently in development, giving fans of the Nintendo 64 classic a new way to experience Rare’s 1999 platformer on modern hardware. The project was revealed in a new YouTube video by 2dos and is being developed by members of the Donkey Kong 64 Randomiser community.

Built using N64: Recompiled, an open-source recompilation framework created by Wiseguy, the port is being developed by Rainchus, Ballaam, Killklli and Umed. It will support Windows, macOS and Linux, allowing the game to run natively instead of relying on traditional emulation.

As with similar recompilation projects, users will need to provide their own legally obtained Donkey Kong 64 ROM, which supplies the original copyrighted game assets. Once configured, players will gain access to a variety of modern improvements, including high frame rate support, true widescreen, higher resolutions and reduced input latency.

The developers are also planning extensive mod support. Compatibility with the popular DK Randomiser is expected in a future update, while support for the Tag Anywhere mod will let players switch between the game’s five playable Kongs without returning to a Tag Barrel. This addresses one of the most commonly criticized mechanics in the original game by significantly reducing backtracking.

According to 2dos, the project was created using years of experience working with Donkey Kong 64 rather than relying on AI-assisted coding, emphasizing a handcrafted approach to the recompilation effort.
