For decades, most Western fans experienced Ys through console ports and remakes. Now, thanks to a newly released fan translation, players can finally explore the original PC-88 version of Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen in English.

Released by translator GhaleonX, the patch brings the complete 1987 action RPG to English-speaking audiences for the first time. The project recently appeared on the romhack.ing database, making one of Nihon Falcom’s most influential titles far more accessible to retro RPG enthusiasts.

If you’ve only played later versions of Ys, this release offers a fascinating look back at the series’ roots. The original PC-88 edition features the iconic bump combat system that helped define early action RPGs, allowing players to attack enemies simply by colliding with them at the correct angle.

Beyond the gameplay, the PC-88 version is often praised for its distinctive computer-era presentation. Its colorful graphics, memorable FM soundtrack, and raw design give it a very different feel from the console adaptations that followed.

The translation covers dialogue, menus, and story content while remaining faithful to the original release. While some emulator setup is still required, anyone eager to experience one of the foundations of the action RPG genre now have a much easier way to do so.
