Today marks 30 years since the launch of the Nintendo 64 in Japan, and for many, that’s enough to trigger a flood of childhood memories. Released on June 23, 1996, the Nintendo 64 represented Nintendo’s bold leap into the world of 3D gaming. While competition from the PlayStation and Sega Saturn was fierce, the N64 carved out its own identity through innovative hardware and a library packed with classics.

The system introduced millions of players to analog controls through its iconic three-pronged controller. It may have looked unusual, but that analog stick helped redefine movement in 3D games and influenced countless controllers that followed.

Of course, no discussion about the Nintendo 64 is complete without mentioning its legendary games. Super Mario 64 practically rewrote the rulebook for 3D platformers, while titles like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Banjo-Kazooie, and GoldenEye 007 became defining experiences for an entire generation.

Although the console sold around 33 million units worldwide, its impact goes far beyond sales figures. Many of the camera systems, control schemes, and game design principles introduced during the N64 era still influence developers today.

Three decades later, the Nintendo 64 remains one of the most beloved consoles ever created. Judging by the anniversary celebrations online, plenty of players still remember exactly where they were when they first stepped into Peach’s Castle, raced through Rainbow Road, or battled friends in GoldenEye.
