As 2025 comes to an end, GameDiscoverCo has shared its year-to-date estimates for the best-selling new video games across major platforms. The data offers a clear look at how players spent their money this year and points to several strong trends, from the rise of co-op games to the continued success of big action RPGs.
On Steam, the list of top new games by units sold shows a wide mix of genres and prices. Cheaper games played a big role in pushing overall sales higher than in 2024. Nearly every game in the Top 20 sold more than 2 million copies, and seven titles passed the 5 million mark, showing just how large the market has become.
One of the biggest trends highlighted by GameDiscoverCo is the growth of co-op games made to be played with friends. Often called “friendslop,” these games focus on chaos, humor, and shared moments rather than skill alone. Titles such as R.E.P.O, Peak, Schedule I, and RV There Yet? all reached the Steam Top 10 by leaning into this style.
At the same time, high-priced action RPGs continue to rule the premium space. Games like Monster Hunter Wilds, Elden Ring Nightreign, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and Oblivion Remastered show that players are still willing to pay full price for long, deep adventures. Big shooters such as Battlefield 6 and ARC Raiders also performed well, while region-driven hits like Escape From Duckov proved especially strong in China.
When looking at revenue instead of unit sales, the rankings shift toward higher-priced releases. Battlefield 6, Monster Hunter, and ARC Raiders lead the list, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 close behind. Other big-budget games, including Civilization VII, Dying Light: The Beast, and Dune: Awakening, each earned more than $50 million on Steam and secured spots in the Top 20 by revenue.

On consoles, the results change based on platform and audience. PlayStation sales are heavily driven by sports games, which rise much higher than they do on Steam. Soccer, basketball, and American football titles dominate the Top 10, alongside shared hits like Battlefield 6 and Monster Hunter. PlayStation-only games such as Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2 also appear, along with later console releases like Ready or Not and Forza Horizon 5. Every new paid game in the PlayStation Top 20 sold more than 1 million copies.
Xbox shows an even stronger focus on sports titles, with shooters also playing a major role for its core audience. While overall sales numbers are lower than on PlayStation, all Top 10 new Xbox games still passed 1 million units sold, and every game in the Top 20 reached at least 300,000 copies.
GameDiscoverCo also confirmed that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was the most-downloaded third-party game on Game Pass in 2025, closely followed by Oblivion Remastered. Other strong Game Pass titles included Rematch, Sniper Elite: Resistance, Slime Rancher 2, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, with each Top 20 game reaching more than 1 million players.
On the Nintendo Switch in Western markets, Nintendo-published games remained dominant, taking eight spots in the Top 20. Third-party successes leaned toward games that fit the console’s audience, such as Hollow Knight: Silksong and Hades II, cozy experiences like Hello Kitty Island Adventure and Tiny Bookshop, and RPG-style titles including Fantasy Life and Deltarune.
