The drama surrounding the Gothic 1 Remake, developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic, erupted last week following a developer stream that provided a look at NPCs in the Old Camp. The revelation of the redesigned female models, specifically Gomez’s concubines/sex slaves such as Seraphia, Velaya, and Syra, immediately sparked a firestorm of fan outrage and accusations of “woke” censorship.
The central criticism of the redesigns is that they “uglify” the aesthetic and betray the visual style of the original game. Fans argue that the new models strip away the intentional, provocative visual style of the 2001 classic:
Threads on the Steam forums, such as “Concerns about eyecandy models”, exploded with complaints. Developer/Community Manager Zyddie began locking and deleting posts, consolidating them and accusing fans of “toxic hostility” or “troll farming.” Several users reported being banned or accused of “jester farming”, despite many users claiming their posts were constructive feedback.
Amidst the controversy, the developer’s communication has been vague, further frustrating fans. Zyddie’s statement on Steam noted that “Genuine concerns [were] forwarded internally”, but stressed that generic complaints like “‘OMG UGLY’ gives zero details.” However, just a few days later after the backlash, the developers did respond:
“We wish to make something very clear. We are right now being accused of pushing a political or social agenda on our game. We wish to assure you that we don’t have any agenda of any kind. Anyone claiming otherwise is just purely wrong as proven by our extensive catalog of over 150 published games on Steam alone. We are focused on making the best possible gothic game, and everything we do has a reason in the game that will be made clear once you play.
There won’t be any form of censorship or effeminacy. Some characters have different roles, but the main theme and plot remains the same. If you have real concerns about the models of our games, we are more than happy to hear from you in a constructive manner.” – writes on the official Discord server.

While a minority of defenders argue the originals were low-poly and that the ragged clothing is more “realistic” for a prison, the prevailing consensus is that the change is a deliberate “insult” to the loyal fan base and the original vision. Gothic 1’s world is a brutal penal colony where everything, including those provocative outfits on characters like the women in the Old Camp, underscores the desperation and power imbalances.
Scaling back the design to “practical” attire risks pushing away that intentional shock, which was meant to make players uncomfortable and expose the colony’s misogyny. This design choice powerfully conveys that beauty can be a tool for survival and status in a brutal environment like the Valley.
One Steam discussion puts it clearly: “This is censorship, plain and simple. You took away the outfits that showed them as literal sex slaves and replaced them with rags… Why is the female body, or cleavage, suddenly wrong?” Even some women are upset. They say the new look feels “too strict” and offensive, arguing that making the women deliberately unattractive just to avoid criticism from activists is the wrong approach.
