Solo developer Vincent Adinolfi and horror game publisher DreadXP have announced that Heartworm, a retro-inspired survival horror title, will be released for PC via Steam this spring. The game was unveiled during IGN Fan Fest and pays homage to classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, offering a nostalgic yet fresh experience for both long-time fans of the genre and new players.
Heartworm follows the story of Sam, a young woman grieving the loss of her grandfather. Desperate to reconnect with him, she falls into an internet trap and discovers a mysterious forum discussing a supposedly supernatural house in the mountains. Hoping to establish contact with the other side, Sam heads to the house but instead finds herself trapped in a nightmare full of danger and mystery.
The game stands out with its retro design, blending pre-rendered in-game animations to create an aesthetic reminiscent of the late ’90s and classic survival horrors. You can choose between modern over-the-shoulder aiming controls or classic “tank” controls for a more authentic experience. Optional pixelation and retro effects further enhance the nostalgic feel, while the eerie original soundtrack sets the atmosphere for this disturbing adventure.
Heartworm combines exploration, classic puzzles, and a limited combat system, where you use a camera as a weapon to defend against threats. The story explores themes of grief and loss, creating an emotional and atmospheric experience that stays with players long after the game is over.
