Playstack, the publisher behind breakout hits like Balatro, Abiotic Factor, and The Rise of the Golden Idol, is preparing for a major ownership change.
Integrated Media Company, better known as IMC, has agreed to acquire Playstack from current majority owner TruFin in a deal that could bring in around £112.4 million in net cash proceeds. The acquisition still needs shareholder approval, but TruFin has already recommended the vote move forward.
For many players, Playstack has quietly become one of the most reliable indie publishers in the industry over the past few years. The company built a reputation for backing unusual, creative projects that often end up becoming surprise hits. Balatro alone exploded into one of gaming’s biggest indie success stories, helping push Playstack further into the spotlight.
Despite the acquisition news, Playstack CEO Harvey Elliott says players should not expect dramatic changes. According to Elliott, the company’s team, strategy, and focus on premium indie games will remain the same moving forward. In other words, this sounds more like a shift in ownership than a complete restructuring of the publisher itself.
Financially, the company has been performing extremely well. Earlier this year, TruFin revealed that around 85% of Playstack’s games generate positive returns. In 2025 alone, the publisher reportedly brought in £55.3 million in gross revenue, marking a 24% increase year-over-year.
As for IMC, the company already owns several massive entertainment and gaming brands, including Fandom, GameSpot, and Screen Junkies. The acquisition signals that IMC clearly sees long-term value in the indie gaming space, especially with publishers that already have proven momentum.
