We recently had the opportunity to peek into Starsand Island during a media presentation, where the developers answered many questions about the game. It is currently extremely successful on Kickstarter; as I write this, they have raised over $190,000 with eight days left in the campaign. For those who haven’t heard yet, Starsand Island is a “cozy” island life simulator set to release on Steam in Q4 2025.

At its core, Starsand Island focuses on the joy in simple, everyday moments. Unlike many farming simulators that prioritize efficiency and numbers, this game places emotional connections above statistics. As Lead Designer Golton Gao states: “Life has no inherent meaning, so you get to decide how to live it.” Mini-events are present at every turn, whether you’re fishing up story-revealing bottles or laughing at the legendary “golden dropping” left by your animal friend.

The true experience of Starsand Island lies in the NPCs, inspired by real-life personalities, from shy dreamers to vibrant optimists. You will form meaningful bonds with characters like Solara, who might share a midnight fireworks show with you, or Serena, who takes you shopping, turning ordinary tasks into unforgettable memories. “We want players to feel cozy, like they belong in this world,” says Narrative Designer Richardo Wang. These subtle moments, like waking up to Pastelle’s breakfast with the sun illuminating your home, make the world feel alive, not just a series of codes.

The developers crafted a custom engine from scratch, allowing you to reshape almost everything, from winding paths to entire villages. Want a Japanese alleyway or a Nordic settlement? You can choose. One tester created a garden labyrinth so complex that the developers themselves got lost and had to teleport out. With endless customization options, the island truly is your canvas. “It’s a nightmare for the programmers, but we’re crazy enough to make it happen,” Gao laughs.

Multiplayer features will be further developed, with plans for photo contests and Easter eggs for players as secrets to be found across the island. “We want Starsand Island to feel like home,” says Gao, and the team is committed to evolving the game with the help of community feedback to add new events and stories after launch.
