The Dark Queen of Mortholme, a short narrative “anti-game” that won over players on the itch.io platform, is ready to debut on Steam and GOG on August 15, 2025. Developed by solo developer Mosu in collaboration with Monster Theater, it places you in the role of the dark queen, a powerful antagonist who defends her throne from a persistent hero.

Unlike traditional games, here you are not the hero saving the world, but the queen who must protect her kingdom. The game takes place on a fixed screen, where you use devastating attacks to defeat the hero. However, each defeat makes him smarter and stronger. This roguelike dynamic forces you to adapt your strategies, while dialogues shape the story and determine whether you will understand the hero’s perspective or remain the eternal queen.

The story is told in the second person and lasts approximately 24 minutes, designed for a single, emotionally potent experience. Various endings depend on the dialogues you choose. Additionally, this game explores themes of change, relationships, and accepting one’s own mortality. The handcrafted pixel graphics, which evoke nostalgia alongside a modern aesthetic, are carefully designed to complement the feeling of the gameplay.
