Publisher Firesquid and developer Quickfire Games have announced that the dark fantasy tactical RPG Prelude: Dark Pain will enter Steam Early Access on July 27, 2026. The upcoming strategy game combines turn-based combat, squad customization, and story-driven choices in a world consumed by an ancient evil.

Set in the fractured realm of Statera, players take on the role of Soren, a legendary warrior turned blacksmith who becomes the catalyst for a rebellion against the oppressive Order of the Ashen Crusade. Alongside a growing band of allies, Soren must confront both a ruthless regime and terrifying creatures emerging through mysterious rifts known as the Veil.

Combat centers on tactical, turn-based battles where you command a party of up to five heroes. More than 20 playable characters are available, each featuring two talent trees and access to a pool of 25 skills. You can mix heroes from eight different classes to create unique team compositions and powerful ability combinations.

Outside of battle, Prelude: Dark Pain offers extensive management systems. Players can upgrade their settlement, craft new weapons and equipment, and send heroes on missions to rescue villages, gather resources, or spy on enemy forces. However, heroes assigned to these expeditions become temporarily unavailable for combat, adding another layer of strategic planning.

The game also features branching decisions that influence both the main storyline and which heroes can be recruited. Alongside the central campaign, optional World Missions expand the game’s lore while unlocking additional companions.
