Tower-defense games are usually hit or miss, you either love them or you don’t. However, on Monday, July 22, two new releases proved that there’s still plenty of faith in the genre. Cataclismo, published by Hooded Horse, and Artisan TD, released by Unexpected, both showed strong potential.

Cataclismo reached a peak of over 2,552 concurrent players just a few hours after launch, while Artisan TD holds a solid 2,038 concurrent players. Despite the flood of indie games this month, with more than 50 new titles released daily, it seems players know exactly what to pick. These player numbers may seem modest, but the tower-defense genre manages to gather an audience thanks to its blend of simplicity and complexity, appealing to both casual and hardcore players.

Cataclismo currently sits at 97.17% positive reviews on Steam, while Artisan TD boasts an impressive 98.89% positive rating. Players praise both games for their smooth gameplay and numerous accessibility features. The user-friendly interface and extensive quality-of-life elements are also highlighted as major strengths, contributing to a comfortable and welcoming experience.

Both games are available on Steam. Cataclismo is in Early Access, which is typical for Hooded Horse titles, while Artisan TD is available as a full release.
