Ubisoft Montpellier’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has achieved impressive success, attracting 2 million players worldwide since its launch in January 2024. This side-scrolling Metroidvania, featuring the new protagonist Sargon, has revitalized the Prince of Persia franchise, returning it to its 2D platforming roots with stylized 2.5D graphics and a focus on single-player gameplay.
As a kind of “soft reboot,” The Lost Crown moves away from the 3D action-adventure style of earlier titles like The Two Thrones and The Forgotten Sands, embracing the precision and exploration of classics such as Hollow Knight and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Its success, with 1.3 million copies sold in its first year, has spurred a franchise revival, with the announcement of more new projects on the way.
The official Prince of Persia Twitter profile celebrated the milestone of 2 million players and hinted at future projects that might feature Sargon or other princes. These promises align with recent developments, including The Rogue Prince of Persia, a roguelike spin-off from Evil Empire that entered Early Access in 2024 and will receive new content throughout 2025. Additionally, the long-delayed remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is now targeting a 2026 release.
Despite critical acclaim and a significant player base, The Lost Crown reportedly fell short of Ubisoft’s expectations, which allegedly led to the disbandment of the development team. This financial underperformance reflects broader challenges Ubisoft is facing with recent titles. Nevertheless, the game’s growing popularity, fueled by mobile versions and positive word-of-mouth, continues to draw in new players.
