Nintendo has high expectations for the Switch 2, forecasting sales of 15 million units globally in the first nine months, from June 5, 2025, to March 31, 2026, alongside 45 million software titles sold, according to their financial report for fiscal year 2025. This ambitious estimate, which only covers the console’s initial release period, could surpass the original Switch, which sold 17.79 million units in its first year (2017–2018).

The original Switch is already a phenomenon, with 2.74 million units sold in its first month and 15.05 million in its first full year. With 152.12 million units sold by the end of fiscal 2025, after an additional 10.8 million in that year, and an expected 4.5 million more in fiscal 2026, it is almost certain to become the best-selling Nintendo console of all time, surpassing the Nintendo DS record of 154.02 million units.

However, as the Switch approaches the end of its life cycle, fiscal year 2025 recorded declines:

  • Net Sales: Fell by 30.3% to ¥1.16 trillion ($8.03 billion).
  • Profit: Decreased by 43.2% to ¥278.8 billion ($1.9 billion).
  • Hardware Sales: Fell by 31.2% to 10.8 million units.
  • Software Sales: Decreased by 22.2% to 155.41 million titles.
  • Digital Sales: Fell by 26.5% to ¥326 billion ($2.25 billion).
  • Mobile/Licensing Revenue: Fell by 27% to ¥67.6 billion ($466.8 million), impacted by reduced revenue from The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

While the original Switch concludes its journey, Nintendo is pinning its hopes on the Switch 2 as the new engine for growth, projecting sales of ¥1.9 trillion ($13.1 billion) in fiscal 2026. With high anticipation and Nintendo’s proven track record, the Switch 2 could surpass its predecessor and further solidify the company’s dominance in the video game world.
