Nintendo has officially confirmed its strategic commitment to becoming a consistent force in the film industry, with the goal of releasing movies on a consistent schedule. Speaking during the company’s latest financial results briefing, President Shuntaro Furukawa said: “We are continuing to prepare for the ongoing release of movies in the future.”
This declaration reflects a deliberate expansion of the company’s intellectual property framework, directly building on the monumental success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. That film’s global gross of over $1.3 billion not only provided a financial boon but also revitalized global interest in Nintendo’s iconic characters outside of gaming.
| Movie Title | Type | Projected Release Year | Partners/Notes |
| The Super Mario Galaxy Movie | Animated | 2026 | Developed with Illumination; based on the space-themed Wii classic. |
| The Legend of Zelda | Live-Action | 2027 | Partnering with Sony Pictures and Arad Productions; directed by Wes Ball. |
| Unannounced Projects | Various | Post-2027 | Insiders suggest at least two more films are in early production across multiple IPs. |
These cinematic efforts are supported by internal structural development, including the 2022 establishment of Nintendo Pictures, an animation studio, and Nintendo Stars, a subsidiary focused on handling licensing and secondary uses of film content. The ultimate goal is to achieve a consistent release rhythm, much like major film franchises such as Disney.
This announcement arrives as Nintendo reports strong financial performance, with 128 million monthly active users, even while the company focuses heavily on transitioning development toward the Nintendo Switch 2.
