Pairs & Perils offers a fresh perspective on roguelike deckbuilders, merging strategic memory mechanics with challenging dungeon-crawling. Developed by Little Horror Studios and published by Rogue Duck Interactive, the game is slated for release on January 20, 2025 for PC via Steam. Players will encounter a unique twist on the classic card-matching game, where matching cards becomes crucial for survival.
In the game, you face enemies by pairing hero cards with their corresponding weapons to attack while avoiding traps that deal damage and skip turns. Enemies don’t just sit idly; their attack counters tick down with every turn, pressuring you to act quickly and smartly. After battles, you can visit the Merchant’s Goods to buy relics and consumable cards. Relics offer passive effects triggered by specific conditions, while consumables provide powerful one-time benefits during battles.
Adding to the challenge, enemies come with unique abilities that can disrupt your strategies, such as stealing gold, spawning extra skeleton cards, or destroying hard-earned relics. Each playthrough is different, with randomized enemies, relics, and consumables ensuring no two runs are the same. The game also features a final showdown in the dungeon’s deepest room against a boss that changes with every playthrough.
