Looking for a publisher that knows what it’s doing? Kwalee is the right choice. They recently released the game The Precinct on Steam, which players love, but now they are working on something completely different: the disco-punk space boomer shooter RetroSpace. This title blends stealth, action, and immersive sim elements in a retro-futuristic world. It’s coming to PC via Steam, although the release date is not yet known.
The story of RetroSpace begins far in the future. You are an ordinary cleaner on the huge space station Aurora 5, which houses the last group of humans searching for a new planet. But things get weird when a black hole swallows the station. It suddenly becomes a labyrinth full of mutated creatures (part animal, part plant), corrupted security robots, and time distortions that shift you between two periods.
The entire plot is described as a “disco fever space satire,” so we expect witty moments, but also surprising depth, something like a cross between Dead Space and Prey. Aurora 5 in RetroSpace is designed as a large, connected puzzle. As you explore, you unlock shortcuts and discover secret passages. There is also a main zone that is mostly safe, where you can take a breather from the station’s creepy threats.
Survival requires smart thinking because the enemies are diverse, with different behaviors, abilities, and weaknesses. You can also manipulate the station’s security system to set traps, use defenses to your advantage, or utilize light and shadows for cover. Every combat encounter is like a small puzzle.
RetroSpace also gives you the freedom to play how you want. If you prefer stealth, you can avoid conflicts by hiding or creating distractions. If you’re braver, you can rush in and use parts torn from enemies as weapons. Furthermore, finding experimental upgrades, called Mutamods, grants superpowers like tentacled arms or mind control.
