S4U: Citypunk 2011 and Love Punch by U0U Games is a narrative adventure and visual novel set in a world inspired by desktop chat software from the early 2010s. The game follows Miki, a young woman trying to balance the challenges of early adult life, her personal goals, her digital life, and her part-time job as a chat agent for clients. Through this job, she meets various people and explores the world of the Cyber-Life online platform. Over nine in-game days, you experience her journey through engaging conversations, life-altering decisions, and quiet moments of reflection.

This is a charming and fun game that immediately draws you in. Its impressive elements, such as the retro computer interface, chat windows, system sounds, and digital workspace, are complemented by interesting music. Although the visuals may initially seem overwhelming as you deal with the chat logs of Miki’s family, colleagues, and clients, the experience soon becomes personal. You will quickly develop an understanding of each character and connect with them in some way.

How Is It Played?

At the core of S4U is shaping Miki’s personality and relationships through your dialogue choices. Your responses can determine whether Miki is assertive, apologetic, or takes a neutral stance. Her job as a “Mouthpiece,” where she takes on the online identity of others to navigate difficult conversations, adds an interesting twist. You must craft replies that fit her personality while still meeting the clients’ expectations.

One fun feature is how the game displays Miki’s thoughts if you hesitate too long before selecting a response. Sometimes you can choose between multiple replies, depending on the desired outcome. It’s fascinating to see how the story shifts based on your decisions, leaving you curious about what might have happened if you had chosen differently. This makes the game perfect for multiple playthroughs to explore all possible outcomes. You can also build romantic relationships with one of four characters.

So, how do you play? You type out responses in the chat, but the options are pre-written, so you choose from the selections provided. The game allows you to delete and rewrite replies before sending them. The pacing, where you often wait for replies, allows you to engage more deeply with the story. While you can speed up some parts by pressing SHIFT, you’ll still need to read most of the chat to understand the bigger picture. Although some chitchat isn’t essential, paying attention to the text is usually key.

Real-Time Dynamics and the Outside World

Everything in this game happens in real-time. The characters you interact with will express frustration if they wait too long for a reply, and certain responses are only available for a limited time after a contact sends you a message. If you’re engaged in a conversation with someone else, you might miss these opportunities, which could be crucial for achieving specific outcomes. This actually happened to me when I spent too much time focusing on my mother.

Outside the chat interface, you can explore Miki’s physical world, meeting people and interacting with her environment. These sections are a nice break from the chats, offering time for reflection and relationship building. However, interactions in these parts, especially early in the game, are quite limited. Still, there are fun mini-games, such as working on a construction project where you must quickly type words on the keyboard.

The pixel-art style in S4U is beautiful, blending retro cyberpunk vibes with stunning neon cityscapes and detailed character designs. The visuals perfectly suit the game’s themes, drawing you into its dystopian world. The Lofi soundtrack further enhances the atmosphere, with relaxing melodies that set the mood for both peaceful and chaotic moments. Even the sound effects, like typing and chat notifications, make the experience feel more realistic.

Final Thoughts

Among the game’s issues, localization and text formatting stand out. Some jokes don’t translate well into English, and the text occasionally has problems with spacing and pacing. As a fast reader, I felt that some of the trivial conversations, like those with Nilo, dragged on longer than necessary. While it’s hard to please everyone, I would have preferred to skip less significant exchanges.

S4U: Citypunk 2011 and Love Punch is an innovative and excellently executed visual novel that pushes the boundaries of the genre. The requirement to shape the responses yourself increases engagement, while the thoughtful story encourages moral reflection, making the experience memorable despite minor issues with pacing and localization.

Pros Cons
Unique gameplay experience. Reading pace won’t appeal to everyone.
Decisions have tangible consequences. Limited world exploration.
Relative topics where everyone can find themselves. Too specific narration for individual characters.
Beautiful pixel graphics and soundtrack. Chaotic early parts of the game.
